Nissui subsidiary, Yumigahama Fisheries, harvested the first mackerel raised in RAS. The milestone is part of Nissui and Hitachi Zosen joint development of the first large-scale land-based mackerel farm in Japan. The first batch weighed 250-350g and was sold to mass retailers and fishery wholesalers.

The project combines Nissui and Yumigahama Fisheries’ knowledge in mackerel farming and Hitachi Zosen’s water treatment technology. The companies aim to reduce the risk of fish diseases and provide a stable supply of mackerel that is not affected by the natural environment.

The companies will work on shortening the whole production process to improve profitability and business feasibility. The joint development is expected to be commercialized in 2023.
