Signify to provide Salmon Evolution with lights to optimize RAS salmon production
Monday, June 21, 2021
Signify will provide Salmon Evolution with overhead and underwater aquaculture lighting for the company’s land-based salmon farming facility that is scheduled to be opened at Indre Harøy, Norway in 2022. The lights will help Salmon Evolution to improve the well-being of fish and increase its production.
Signify’s aquaculture lighting solutions, such as the Philips submerged LED lights and lights above the tanks, ensure proper distribution of fish throughout the tank and that fish continue to swim in the same direction and at the same speed, which mirrors their natural behavior and calms them down. Built from the most durable marine-grade alloy constructions, the lights require minimal to no hardware maintenance. Capable of the deepest dimming levels (<1%), these flicker-free solutions can simulate sunset and sunrise conditions and provide gradual ramp-up behavior, thus protecting fish from the stress that inferior lighting can cause.
“We chose Philips aquaculture LED lights as it provides us with full control over our lighting in one place. Signify has an experienced team that does what is needed to advise the optimal solution to support our fish production and we believe the LED lights will help us grow healthy salmon in a sustainable way,” said Ingjarl Skarvøy, COO from Salmon Evolution. “We particularly like the control system, the research into fish physiology that was done to create the right light recipe and the gradual ramp-up of the lights, so the fish have time to get adjusted to the lights.”
“Lighting hardware needs to withstand damp and otherwise challenging conditions. It also needs to be designed so as not to encumber the free circulation of fish - even as it illuminates the entirety of the tank, no matter how many fish that tank contains or how turbid its waters may be,” said Roar Ristesund, key account manager aquaculture lighting at Signify. “With the possibility to upgrade the control system through the intuitive interface, the tank- and site-specific lighting commissioning and scheduling services can be managed easily.”
