Water and waste treatment specialist, Smøgenlax, has become a co-owner of Smart Salmon Holding France, a subsidiary of Norwegian company Smart Salmon Group that plans an 8,000-tonne salmon farm in France.

Smøgenlax has extensive competency in the foodstuff industry and is specialized in water and waste treatment including running a biogas facility in Sweden. Merging this expertise with Smart Salmon’s fish farming and French system competency, the company will stand stronger in realizing the plans for sustainable land-based salmon farming in France.

The French facility will include a hatchery, nursery and full grow-out area, as well as slaughtering and processing departments delivering consumer-branded products, all under the same roof. It will feature AquaMaof RAS technology. The concept is a carbon-neutral and fully-circular fish farm, with the ambition to have greenhouse production from recycled resources from the fish production.

As a result of the capital increase, Smart Salmon is looking forward to extending its efforts in France. The company applied in February for the farm license delivery in the country.
